Evidently here in the very educated Research Triangle area we're too damn stupid to learn a thing from your mess two weeks ago. Embarrassing as heck.

Research Triangle cannot research traffic patterns.

Yup.
My basically same post is at http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/raleigh-is-an-… .
A good friend of ours left her car at Rex Healthcare in Cary; her firefighter husband managed to get there to get her in their SUV, and at last word they were working their way back along US-1.
My wife left work just short of noon; her boss and her boss' husband stayed at work an hour or so longer than she did. They have a 13 mile commute. At last check, they're still on the road at 4 PM.
People WILL be sleeping in their cars tonight. SouthPoint Mall was closed, but has been opened as a refuge for people stranded on I-40.

More opponauts in the area than I thought. What is the deal with people abandoning their cars?

At least most Atlantans stayed home this time :)
Be safe and warm.

Hahaha. The situation isn't funny (I live in the Atlanta suburbs) but the way you presented it was hysterical.

I live in Chapel Hill and it was a cluster fuck of the highest order. I couldn't even get out of my parking space in my Mazda truck, had to drive my roommate's H3 to get him from campus. The main roads were at a standstill, with everybody waiting for the Prius to make it up the hill...

What's absurd is that this same thing happened in January 2005. Exactly the same thing but worse in that the schools were open and all let out at the same time. Like you guys 2 weeks ago, we had kids sleeping in schools...but for only one night.

Thanks. I work from home (canceled my planned trip to Birmingham and south GA this week); my wife didn't go to work. She, at least, learned from Atlanta...
